St. Brigid’s is a haven for wildlife. It is a natural habitat for many animals. We have a school pond, trees, an orchard, bug hotels, compost heap, and many manufactured and hand-made bird feeders.
Science Week
1st class made bird feeders from recycled materials and they were put up around the school grounds as part of Science week.
Native Trees
We were given 19 native trees by the charity Self Help Africa including oak, rowan, hazel, hawthorn, birch, alder and oak. We made a tree nursery on the school grounds. We plan to plant the trees out in October when they are bigger and stronger.
Litter Picking/ Caring for our Local Environment
Mrs Vaughans 2nd class was selected to do the Picker Pals programme (this allows children to go home and pick up rubbish with a guardian around their area using litter pickers).
We will also take part in the Team Limerick Clean Up this Easter. We love to care for our local and school environment.
Gardening
The Green’s school committee are taking part in the Woodie’s Budding Gardeners competition. We painted flower pots and planted dahlia bulbs. We are going to plant wildflower seeds and lettuce later in the next couple of months.
A number of pupils in our school are planting a variety of fruit and vegetables in our school garden, including strawberries, potatoes, chives, carrots, turnips and lettuce as part of the incredible edibles programme.
Measuring Air Quality
5th class are taking part in the Globe air quality campaign. We are measuring levels of No2 by putting up three diffusion tubes around our school grounds. We will send the tubes to a laboratory at the end of the month to be analysed. We can’t wait to get our results!
