The pupils from the three third classes visited Craggaunowen on their school tour on the 14th of June. They visited the Crannógs and learned all about life during the prehistoric era. The concept of Craggaunowen was the idea of John Hunt. The pupils also had the opportunity to view an early Christian ring fort from the 6th century. They learned all about fabric and fibres, from Geraldine our tour guide who demonstrated a drop wheel and a spinning wheel. Craggaunowen Castle was built by the McNamaras in the 16th Century. The children all climbed to the top of the castle and were amazed at the breathtaking view. We saw an Iron Age road made from wood, a fullacht fiadh and of course a soutterrain which would have been used as a passage way or for food storage. We then visited Tim Severin’s replica boat modelled on St. Brendan’s Boat. A great fun filled day was had by all.
